Jamie's List of Media Genres

As I made preparations to teach a media analysis class, I discovered that there does not appear to be one, "central" list that lists all of the types of media genres that exist, with definitions. Instead, many short and specialized lists exist. This project attempts to provide a listing of most genres under two lists of fiction and non-fiction.

What is a Genre?
The Thompson Writing Program at Duke University provides the following definition of a "genre":

We use the term genres to describe categories of written texts that have recognizable patterns, syntax, techniques, and/or conventions. This list represents genres students can expect to encounter during their time at Duke. The list is not intended to be inclusive of all genres but rather representative of the most common ones.
