Capitalization and Punctuation of Titles

Capitalization

Titles are not capitalized in English the same way they are in French:

Example English Title Example French Title
Xxxxx Xxxx xxx Xxxx Xxxxxx Xx Xxx xxx Xxx Xxxxx xxxx xxx xxxx xxxxxx xx xxx xxx xxx

Can you see the difference?

There Are Rules for Capitalization Within Titles

Most of the words in titles of compositions and essays are capitalized in English. The first letter of the first word and the first letter of the last word in titles are always capitalized. Use the “CAP” acronym (for capitals) to remember which words in a title not to capitalize:

C – coordinate conjunctions (and, or, nor, but, for, yet, so)

A – articles (“a”, “an”, “the”)

P – prepositions fewer than 5 letters long (e.g. “in”, “on”, “over”)

Punctuation

The period (".") is not used in titles.  However, exclamations ("!") and question marks ("?") are permitted.
