Learners Pronouncing the "CH" sound as "SH"

“CH” and “SH” are two different phonemes in English.

Often Francophones have trouble pronouncing the "ch" sound in English. They'll pronounce it as an "sh" sound.  For example, they will pronounce the word "church" as "shurch," or they will pronounce the word "search" as "searsh," or they will pronounce the word "merchandise" as "mershandise." Often this difficulty occurs when there is an "r" sound nearby.

On the other hand, Hispanophones may pronounce these sounds interchangeably in their own language without changing word meaning. For example, students may pronounce chimenea as “chimenea” or “shimenea.” This can cause some difficulty for Hispanophones when they speak in English.

This website shows you how to pronounce the "ch" sound correctly.
